Ha Noi (VNA) - The promulgation of the HIV/AIDS prevention law and policies as well as the active mobilisation of resources have helped Viet Nam actively prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, said a senior official of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

At a working session in Ha Noi on Oct. 10 with the Viet Nam Administration of HIV/AIDS Control (VAAC) under the Ministry of Health, Dr. Kevin De Cock, Director of the WHO's Department of HIV/AIDS, also spoke highly of the determination of the Party, Government and relevant agencies of Viet Nam in implementing commitments with the United Nations to fight against HIV/AIDS.

He said prevention and treatment are considered unseparated issues in the UN strategy on HIV/AIDS prevention until 2010, under which all HIV/AIDS patients will be provided with antiretroviral (ARV) treatment.

The WHO mission reconfirmed the organisation's further technical assistance to the Vietnamese health sector to prevent the epidemic through community-based health care programmes.

Dr. Duong Quoc Trong, Director of the VAAC, said Viet Nam will give priority to raising public awareness about the disease, providing HIV/AIDS counselling and testing, and further monitoring HIV/AIDS carriers.

During its two day visit, the WHO delegation called at a number of healthcare centres in Ha Noi and worked with local and international agencies involved in HIV/AIDS prevention in Viet Nam.
